Start with what the policy covers

Your declarations page lists the coverages you bought, their limits, and any deductibles. Start there when reviewing a policy. A label such as “full coverage” does not tell you exactly what is included.

Liability and protection for your own car

Liability coverage addresses covered injury or property damage you are legally responsible for causing to others. It does not generally repair your own vehicle. Collision addresses covered damage to your vehicle from a collision or rollover. Comprehensive addresses certain other losses, such as theft or fire, subject to the policy.

What to ask before buying

Before buying, ask the insurer or agent to walk through the coverage list. If the car is financed or leased, check the agreement too: the lender may require protection beyond your state’s minimum.

  • Which limits and deductibles apply to each coverage?
  • What exclusions or restrictions should I know about?
  • Are uninsured motorist, medical, or personal injury coverages included?
  • Does the policy cover my actual vehicle use?
